Headteachers Welcome

I am delighted to have been appointed as the next Head Teacher of Tavistock and Summerhill School. I have lots of exciting plans for the year ahead, and I look forward to beginning my tenure in September.

As an educator and leader I have a keen interest in 21st century learning. With the rapid rate of technological change, the world is evolving fast. Therefore, it is important that our children are properly equipped with the right skills and knowledge to face the challenges ahead. I believe that a strong academic curriculum is essential for future success; particularly in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

I am also passionate about individualised learning. I want every child at Tavistock & Summerhill School to have their own personal learning programme, to ensure that their educational requirements are being met. Furthermore, it is important that our children should be able to discuss their own learning goals.  Research shows that, if children challenge themselves, they often become more motivated and successful in their academic studies.

Of course, there many fine qualities of Tavistock & Summerhill School that I wish to maintain. For example, high behavioural standards, exemplary manners, excellent work habits, pride in uniform and positive and caring relationships are all key features of the school that I will continue to emphasize in my role as your new Head.

Finally, I would like to end this letter with one of my favourite quotes, which I believe sums up the role of a successful school:

“Every Child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” – Rita F. Pierson

I look forward to joining a wonderful team of dedicated staff, who are already champions of your children’s education.

Yours faithfully
