At Tavistock and Summerhill our aim is to produce children who feel at ease with, and derive pleasure from, the English language as well as being able to function successfully as literate members of our school and society. Our English policy incorporates the National Literacy Framework while also being focused on the need to prepare our pupils for Scholarship and Common Entrance Examinations or Common Academic Examinations to Public Schools.
We do teach handwriting and spelling on a regular basis and at the same time we are very keen to develop the children's writing. The children's creative writing is regularly stimulated through writing competitions and visiting authors.
Reading is also seen as a high priority with the majority of our children being at least two years ahead of their chronological age by the time they reach Year 6. Please note that the majority of children also reach SATs Level 2 at the end of Key Stage 1 and Level 5 by the end of Key Stage 2.
