History

The study of History at Tavistock and Summerhill allows pupils to learn about the History of England in a chronological way and to look at the way in which ancient people lived. In Year 3 pupils follow the theme of 'Invaders and Settlers', studying the coming of the Celts, Romans and Saxons to our shores. This theme is continued in Year 4 with the Vikings. Also in Year 4 pupils look at life in Ancient Egypt and Greece.

In Year 5 the themes are the Tudors and Stuarts and Explorers, finishing with the study of the Aztec civilisation. Year 6 study the Victorians and the Twentieth Century, focusing on World War II.

In Years 7 & 8 pupils begin preparation for the Common Entrance examination. This is English History from 1066 to 1485. In these final two years much emphasis is placed upon the examination of source material and the writing of more analytical essays.
