At Tavistock and Summerhill we think that the learning of a foreign language is a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for every pupil. Learning another language raises awareness of a multilingual and multicultural world and consolidates an international dimension to pupils, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others.
The overall aim, for each and every child, is for them to reach their potential in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Ultimately the learning of a language raises horizons, broadens outlooks and opens children's eyes to a world which is full of rich and rewarding opportunities. By being successful in their language learning at school, not only does the barrier to communicating with this world disappear but young learners realise that all languages are accessible which thereby makes all parts of the globe accessible to them.
