At Tavistock and Summerhill we believe in offering a full, varied, all round physical education programme. The children enjoy a wide variety of sports in their games afternoons and PE lessons: netball, football, rounders, cricket, rugby, hockey, dance, gymnastics, athletics, swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA).
Other sports such as tennis and chess are offered in clubs. The younger children also focus on improving the FUNdamental skills they need to play these games well, using a variety of activities and small games to improve co-ordination, agility, balance, speed and strength. All children, from Reception to Year 8, swim in our own on-site pool, developing water confidence and safety as well as learning all four strokes.
We have links (that can be found on our home page) with a variety of clubs in Sussex. In the Autumn Term, Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club provide coaches for games sessions to offer high quality football coaching and in the Summer term, Haywards Heath Cricket Club offer a similar scheme.
Gifted and talented children are identified for further development with our partners and all of our children are encouraged to join local teams and clubs. Past and present students have been selected for the Elite Sussex Football Development team, where they work with outstanding FA and UEFA Qualified Coaches, Chartered Physiotherapists and FA Psychologists, as well as attending seminars on nutrition, hydration and developing confidence and self-belief. They also have the opportunity to participate in international tournaments around Europe.
Colours
Children are awarded colours if they consistently perform at a high standard in both training and matches for the school. They are hard working, play fairly and in a good spirit. The following children received colours in our last itinerarium:
