If any one had told me when I joined Tavistock halfway through year 2 that six years later I would win an academic exhibition to Lancing College I wouldn?t have believed them. In the first place I had a lot of catching up to do and in the second I had to be taught to relish an academic challenge. Needless to say the staff and pupils at Tavistock gave me the courage and inspiration I needed. It was not until the end of year 5 when I won the form prize that I hoped I might be in the scholarship class. The scholarship exams are tough. They are not taken at Tavistock surrounded by people you know, but among strangers in the school you are entered for, in my case Lancing. They were the hardest two and a half days of my life, with five one to one interviews, one of which was in French and another that turned out to be a mental maths test. There were nine written papers, in English, Maths, French(x2), Science, Latin, R.S, History and Geography. As the words ?scholarship level? suggest, they really do require you to concentrate all the time and do some serious thinking. We started with Maths which is not my best subject but I remembered Mrs Gaughran saying some thing like ?Keep Calm and Carry on.? In the breaks between the exams I talked to the other entrants and I knew I had a chance. The last exam was Latin and contained a very apt translation about the Battle of Marathon- yes, the scholarship exams are certainly an endurance test. The exam I enjoyed most was the History exam as at scholarship level you are allowed to express your own opinion and not just regurgitate facts. So, it just shows that at Tavistock a nervous underachieving 7 year old can be turned into a confident 13 year old scholar. A big thank you to all the staff. ... » More

The national final of the under 11 county competition took place in Bolton at the weekend. We arrived to find that several counties and our board 1 (of 16) were stuck on a train! However, we started play, and if your opponent didn?t turn up then you just left their clock ticking. My opponent on board 14 was there on time so I played, and beat, him.1/1. Our board one player won easily as well, despite his late arrival. Next, I thrashed someone from Wey Valley, a county who have a rather strong reputation so I was very pleased! In the final round I accidentally stalemated my opponent from Northern Ireland (very annoyed with myself, - I had a winning position). Then, we drove home. My final score: 2.5/3. ... » More
Year 7 immersed themselves in British history last Thursday when they visited Battle Abbey. After watching a dramatic re-enactment of the Battle and trying to get to grips with the various interactive challenges in the Visitor?s Centre, we walked around the battlefield and recapped the main events in the places where they occurred, including the site where Harold was believed to have been killed. Much to our collective disappointment, there wasn?t time to visit the tuck shop next to the castle but this did not detract from what was a very worthwhile, educational and enjoyable day. ... » More
