The structure, made of plastic, is a maze of winding paths and soaring domes where Islamic architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals meld into a monument to the beauty of light and colour.

Once inside the children could wander freely through tunnels and domes or just lay back and enjoy the ambience. The children were excited to see how the structure transformed faces and clothing.

The children greatly enjoyed Viking style combat in “Kiddie Vik” sessions. Armed with broomsticks and shields, and under close supervision, they fought the invading Vikings. No quarter was asked or given. Result Tavistock 1, Vikings 0.

Inside Tavistock’s Gym there were more crafts and activities with a Viking theme.

Andy is a Headmaster at the top of his field, with a proven track record of delivery. He has all personal and professional qualities necessary to work with staff, parents and children whilst taking Tavistock and Summerhill School to the next stage in our journey to excellence in learning. His appointment completes our Senior Management Team, bringing together a superb combination of skills and experience with the purpose of establishing Tavistock and Summerhill School as the truly independent Preparatory School of choice for all children in the area.

Andy comes to us from Somerset after ten years in South Aberdeenshire where, aged thirty-six, he was appointed to Lathallan School as Scotland’s youngest Head in 2002. He had previously worked at some of Bath’s most prestigious Independent and State-funded Schools and has vast experience in the Preparatory School Sector including the design and opening of the first Boarding Facility for Junior pupils at Kingswood School. Andy presided over Lathallan’s recent and dramatic development into one of Scotland’s top Independent Schools now boasting some of the best academic results across the country in 2011.

Past business interests have included the founding of a successful Children’s Summer Activity Company throughout the South West. Andy has a special interest in how children learn and their individual educational needs; he has recently been working with teachers developing their delivery style to enable children to better access the curriculum and to enhance their learning experience.

Andy also works with School Senior Management in a general school improvement advisory capacity. He is a Governor of Chard School in Somerset, a Patron of The Lathallan School Foundation and is profiled in ‘Who’s Who in Scotland’. He has a Master of Education Degree in School Management & Leadership from Bristol University and a Teaching Degree in Mathematics and Physical Education. Andy will take on responsibility for teaching Year 7-8 Maths in autumn 2012.

Andy is married to Jackie, a trained teacher with Early Years Specialism and they have two children; William a solicitor based in Marlow and Amy a doctor in Truro. The family extends to three ponies and a Burnese Mountain Dog named Alfie! Andy lists his interests as most sports particularly rugby, keeping fit, gardening, property renovation and letting portfolio, red wine and Islay Malts!

Andy says “At my previous school, the pupils were an absolute delight, everything I would hope for from enthusiastic young people; polite, engaging and excited to be at school! This was my first impression of the Tavistock & Summerhill family and this ethos is of course inspired by the dedicated staff team. I strongly believe in the simple formula that happy children learn better. The role of a good Preparatory School is to encourage and nurture talent and give opportunity. With deliberately small class sizes at Tavistock & Summerhill it is genuinely possible to give individual attention to every child and give them the confidence they need to be articulate and responsible young people. I am thrilled to be involved with the future development of Tavistock and Summerhill School at this exciting time.”

Andy will take up his post officially on 27th February, but will be at school during this week to meet all the staff, parents and children and begin getting up to speed with his new role.

The Vikings invade Tavistock!

Saturday 25th February 09.30am - 3.00pm
In a 7-a-side ‘round robin’ afternoon, teams from Tavistock and Summerhill, St Wilfrid’s and St Joseph’s Schools all played each other once and the winner was decided on a points system. After 10 matches on two pitches that saw a lot of good football, team spirit and sportsmanship from all, the eventual winner on points was St Joseph’s School Team 2. A wholly enjoyable afternoon was concluded by a medal and trophy presentation back at Tavistock and Summerhill with match teas for all!

The Reverend Adam Pymble, assisted by Simeon the Shepherd, gave an entertaining sermon which included getting the children and parents to participate in a Christmas version of "Old MacDonald's Farm" .

Each child, from the very youngest Nursery child to those at the top of the School, greatly enjoyed participating in and watching the event. Children from the Nursery and Pre-Prep Departments played the main nativity characters and older children provided the narration.

Every child received a Christingle Orange, a symbol of the Christian faith. The orange represents the world whilst the candle is to remind us of Jesus because Christians believe Jesus to be The Light of the World. The red ribbon goes all round the ‘world’ and reminds Christians that Jesus died because it represents the blood of Jesus. The four cocktail sticks remind us of God’s gifts to the world including kindness and love.

Some even entered fully into the spirit coming dressed as teachers and pupils! Alastair Friend endeavoured to keep the grown ups behaviour in check as he asked the questions. Our dinner ladies, Sue, Lisa, Chris and Carole served up school favourites sausage, mash and onion gravy and treacle sponge and custard. A raffle and bar, run by Sue Millership, Sarah Hinton and Kate Hurst added to the proceeds. A total of £466.04 was made on the night.

Many of the designs showed great creativity and use of different medium.

Mrs Janman has chosen the winning cards. These were designed by William Ward in Reception and Stephanie Towler in Year 4.

The project has raised £70 for the school.

We started off by Brian Moses telling us that we were on a shipwreck and you could have a book, an object and a person and what and who would it be? My book was "How to Signal Help on a Shipwreck". My object a phone and a person who is an explorer.

Then we were to think that we hated school and what you'd rather do, I'd rather eat slugs and toads!

Next we were paired up with a person from another school and had to each think of a line of insult that rhymes with your partner's. We then had to write a line of compliment that rhymes with your partner's.

We wrote three poems, one rhyming poem of things that you find in your bedroom, loft, shed, shop, etc, then one using abstract nouns and finally a poem on a memory that you have. We were then allowed to buy a signed book.

Over all it was a great day and a great chance to write poetry.

by Millie Critchlow, Year 6

Last Friday afternoon Tavistock and Summerhill hosted a Netball Tournament with some local primary schools. St Giles, St Joseph's and Lindfield Primary attended and all four schools played each other on a round robin basis.

All children proved very adaptable, as not all were used the 7 a side rules. All the children really put their heart and soul into competing and when not doing so they were usefully occupied with other Netball related activities on the top quad. Our team played very well. Laura Tucker and Jasmin King proved effective in the centre of the court. Effie King received spontaneous applause from the audience with her shooting skills from the periphery of the ring.

The competition was decided on the most matches won. Both Tavistock and St Joseph's won the same number of matches and when these 2 teams played it was a close encounter resulting in a 1-1 draw. Ultimately, St Joseph's scored more goals during the afternoon and were crowned the eventual victors of the competition, receiving the Winner’s Trophy. Lindfield and St Giles came joint 3rd, being strong contenders.

During the afternoon the pupils’ experience and skill level noticeably improved , with fewer basic errors being made. All schools were asked to nominate their Most Improved Player of the afternoon. Sophie Hinton was the Tavistock winner for her much improved shooting.

The afternoon was well attended by the parents of the visiting schools. All commented on how much they had enjoyed the tournament, the match tea and the welcoming lively atmosphere. The afternoon was a great success all round and we look forward to hosting the next tournament.

Two somewhat contrasting history trips took place in the last two weeks: years 4 and 5 experienced tranquility of monastic life with a visit to Bayham Abbey, while Year 6 engaged in the industrial grind that can be found at Amberley Chalk Pits Museum.

Bayham abbey is on a remote site to the east of Tunbridge Wells. Ruined in the time of Henry VIII, it is remarkably atmospheric; on a temperate autumnal day (which fortunately it was) it is the perfect place to channel children's imagination and thrust them back into a past where the hours were governed by bells summoning prayers. After much hard listening while monastic life was explained, and much exploring of the ruins, we all set off for Scotney Castle, lunched, and then found the remains of even more medieval splendor.

Year 6's visit to Amberley was altogether more 'hands on' - less listening and more doing: rides on ancient buses and trains, and lots of 'button pushing' and 'doing' activities that illuminated the workings of historical transport, communications and chalk extraction. The sun also shone on this venture.

On Wednesday 5th October the Tavistock and Summerhill Colts football team travelled to Ardingly to compete in a ‘round robin’ tournament against the Ardingly and Ashdown House Colts teams. The boys played some excellent football and the communication between the players on and off the ball was first rate. In a tournament that saw the lads lose 2-1 to Ardingly (in what was a very close match) and draw 1-1 with Ashdown House, the boys showed great determination and team spirit throughout. Darius Dosieah proved a force to be reckoned with upfront and scored goals in both matches with confident finishes. Christopher Brooks thought that the defending was a particularly strong feature of the Tavistock performance and Alex FitzSimmons commented ‘our passing was really good but we need to move the ball around a bit quicker’. Overall the Colts once again did themselves proud away from home – well done Colts! TheTavistock and Summerhill U8/9s football team also travelled to Ardingly to compete in a ‘round robin’ tournament against the Ardingly and Ashdown House U8/9s teams. Louis Dobbin performed fantastically in goal; stopping many of the opposition attempts to score and Joshua Ballinger bagged a goal against Ashdown House, that was set up by Edward Newey – great stuff boys! Although the U8/9s returned without a win this time round, their ‘never give up’ attitude shone through as they continuously fought hard for the ball and kept their heads held high. Well done lads!

The game was split into four quarters in order to change the teams to suit the variable age range. After the first quarter, it was clear that our team were too strong, finishing at 6 - 0 and consequently most of our Year 6s were put on the bench! Effie proved exceptional again, slotting the balls in from the edge and Georgie also proved to be a shooting star. After a change round of positions, the game evened out a little more ending with a victory 14 - 0 to Tavistock. Millie and Jasmin also gave a spirited performance and our captain Laura was, as ever, hugely helpful.

On Wednesday October 5th the whole school gathered for a harvest celebration at All Saints Church, Lindfield. The service was led by Adam, the Curate, whose lively story telling involved a smiley balloon called Rich that eventually popped with a loud bang!

Poems were spoken effectively by Years 3 and 6, and together we sang a variety of traditional harvest hymns. The morning was made special by the inclusion of our Nursery, who joined in with great enthusiasm.

Later that morning, Year 6, along with Mrs. Janman and Mrs. Lack, visited Summerlands and Crossways to distribute the Harvest gifts. We were made very welcome there, and the children spent an enjoyable time chatting with the residents.

Thanks to all for your generosity in providing such a wonderful array of produce, and to those who came to the church to support us.

The children donated £1 each to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl character. The school was buzzing with Big Friendly Giants, Oompa-Loompas and all kinds of phizz-whizzing characters. Everyone, even the staff, managed to look a bit of a twit, but they all had a giant peach of a day. Everybody took part in a Costume Parade; even the staff joined in and the day was led by Miss Trunchball.

Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity needs to raise funds to help seriously ill children with lifelong neurological and blood disorders. Support from fundraising events like The Dahlicious Dress Up Day helps them to fund specialist nurses, equipment and support for children to help make their lives that little bit better.

The children took part in a variety of fun activities across the curriculum, including designing and making their own Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Shop. There was a special Dahl themed assembly, quizzes and lunch with a Dahlicious Chocolate Fountain. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn, have fun and help children less fortunate than themselves” commented the Head, Mrs Janman. “As Willy Wonka said, ‘A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men’”

We played 'toilet' tag and we played another training game called 'cars'. If Sam said 'Ford' we should go medium speed with the ball, if Sam said 'tractor' we should go slowly and if he said 'Ferrari' we should go really fast with the ball close to our feet. Then we played a match. It was great!

They played away against Hurstpierpoint College on Wednesday 7th September in close and well played games. The boys competed in a ‘round robin’ 5-a side tournament with all nine boys getting the opportunity to take part equally in different positions including goalkeeper. There was some excellent defensive work with all boys making strong and determined tackles – Murray Wilson proving to be a real ‘stopper’ at the back! Good midfield passing led to some confident finishes upfront from Freddie Tocher and Edward Newey which secured Tavistock the overall victory. In a tournament that saw Tavistock secure 3 draws and 2 wins the boys did themselves proud – well done lads!

His arrival, dressed as a Saxon, made for a stimulating beginning which was then built on by an informative and engaging talk about the coming of the Germanic tribes to our shores and the life they led.

Of particular interest to the children was the examination of some of the old English vocabulary and discovering its closeness to the language we use today. Classes from year 3 to 8 listened attentively and enjoyed the opportunity to handle artifacts at the end of the talk.

We very much hope that Osgar can come again soon.

Year 8 Leavers

We welcomed three Norwegian Bands from different areas of Norway. The sun shone and the car park was taken over by three coaches!

The first band to perform in the beautiful Walled Garden was a brass band from Lye who played a programme that included The Eye of the Tiger and other film music. Before lunch, the second band from Lura School played a varied programme from a theme tune of a Norwegian cartoon character to music composed by Greig, the well-known Norwegian composer.

After lunch the audience were entertained by a marching band from Hovik, near Oslo. The band marched through the school grounds into the walled garden where they then sat and gave a concert performance of some ‘big band’ pieces.

This fantastic experience was due to a conversation with a previous Headmaster who had links with educational tours from Norway. Having forged this link, Tavistock are now hoping to take a group of children to Norway to sing in December.

The day was a huge success and both Tavistock and the Norwegian students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Norwegians thought the school had a brilliant atmosphere, lovely food and the behaviour of our children was exemplary!

We were lucky with the weather and had a great afternoon watching the athletic abilities of all of our children. Tavistock & Summerhill is a great little school and great things happen here every day, things that go far beyond the classroom:

Our children get opportunities to socialise across all the year groups and are regularly seen to help each other and support each other. Stars of the Week and Merit Certificates stretch much further than academics at Tavi and children are regularly recognised for being kind and helping their classmates.

The House system is fantastic and brings the children together in a wholly different way. You will find that the kids are extremely proud to belong to their House, whether it is Belvedere, Court, Field or Gregory. You can view the House Wall, in the main Foyer! And, on Prize giving day, ear plugs are highly recommended for when the House Winner is announced!

The staff work with our children to engender in them a questioning mind and a kind nature. Responsibilities, such as Form Captain, Sports Captain and Prefect are opportunities that many of the children experience. This builds in them a spirit of responsibility and maturity to which they respond really well.

Tavistock & Summerhill feels like a family, where everyone makes everyone feel welcome and the collective effort is focussed on ensuring that the highest standard of education is provided, in a supportive and caring environment.

Our Head Boy Daniel Brooks gives you the view, at first hand, of a young boy fully prepared for the next stage in his educational journey. I would encourage you to also read the testimonials received from the senior schools where many of our children go. There are currently two such testimonials on the website, from Mrs Ann Aughwane, Headmistress at Burgess Hill School for Girls and Mr Richard Cairns, Headmaster at Brighton College.

The Tavi Family is incredibly proud of what is achieved within this lovely school and you are invited to spend some time today learning a bit more about the ways in which your child can benefit from joining our school community in September 2011.

Our School has gone through many changes in its chequered history, and from each phase of change, Tavistock & Summerhill has emerged even stronger and ready to embrace the future. We are on the edge of another significant change in Tavistock's future and everyone now has the opportunity to be part of it.

As the prospective future governing board at this school, TAG stands before you as an active, engaged and passionate team of professionally competent people, ready and willing to take Tavistock into the next stage of its exciting evolution and development. We have so many ideas and plans that we want to share with you, all of which will enhance even more the learning and social experiences for your children. We want to put Tavistock & Summerhill back on the local map and ensure that more children are able to experience the special daily school life that is willingly offered here.

So, if you like what you have seen today and you feel that Tavistock can offer something special to your child, we ask you to please register with us for September by the end of May. We have a range of limited offers available, including the provision of a new school blazer for every new child entering the school in September (this includes the Boater or cap for PPD!) and we are also offering a free polo shirt and sweat shirt combo for the Nursery entrants.

So, Stand with us as we embark on this exciting journey and share in it with us, safe in the knowledge that your children will be receiving the best possible education, whilst helping to write the next chapter, being part of The Tavi Story and part of the Tavi Family.

21st May 2011

My Dad explained that they had first visited the school on an Open Day 10 years ago and had been shown around by the then Deputy Head Boy. His quiet self-assurance, eloquence, good manners and interest in us had so impressed my father that, on leaving, he said:

“If that is the kind of young man this school produces, this is where I want my son to go.”

After 9 very happy and fun-filled years here, I am now Head Boy with both an all-rounder and an academic scholarship to Lancing College. My Dad is happy!

Academia is, of course, the core objective for any school and Tavistock has an outstanding and enviable reputation in this field but, perhaps even more importantly for me, this is achieved despite instilling a belief that learning is fun. Honestly, it really is!

Outside of the classroom, our education also continues because Tavistock is all-inclusive. For example, on the Sports field, everyone gets to have a go at playing in matches, not just the sporting elite, of whom Tavistock always has a number - Henry playing cricket for Sussex; Dominic playing football for Sussex Elite.

I myself was the Firsts football captain this year. I love football but it was a great experience to have to look at my team and work out how I could play to each individual’s strengths.

The thriving Music department has also played a big part in my life at Tavistock with highlights being the choir’s annual trip to perform at the O2 Arena, singing in the historic St. John’s Church in London and, of course, our very own Summer Concert here in the walled garden. I have to say, though, these are just a very few examples of our musical activities.

At some level in the school, there is almost always some kind of Drama or stage production underway and, again, these involve everyone. The dress rehearsals are always performed to the rest of the school and I really look forward to watching these as well as having taken part in both plays and musicals myself.

Extra-curricular activities are also always being planned and are varied. They include the highly sought after after-school clubs which change from term to term. Those I have particularly enjoyed recently have been fencing and sailing up at Ardingly reservoir.

Then, there are our many educational trips, highlights of which have been our trips to France, particularly that to Paris………, the year 5 activity weekend….., the whole school outing to the immensely interesting Tutenkamun exhibition….but, in one way most memorable was the year 8 geography field trip to the Seven Sisters in gale force conditions and pouring rain – when I wore shorts!

Tavistock is also always ready to help a cause and, if this can be made fun, so much the better – it will be a long time before I forget this year’s Talent Show in aid of Red Nose Day, when all the Year 8 boys dressed up as glamorous ladies to present it!

I hope the foregoing will have given you just a flavour of the adventure that is life at Tavi but the aspect which I will probably treasure most is the outstanding pastoral care which also gives Tavi its wonderful, caring, family environment. Throughout my time, year groups have intermingled happily and when the going gets tough, as it inevitably does on occasions, the support and guidance of the teachers in helping us navigate through it in our own individual way is first-rate and I have learnt so much from them in this regard.

It is often said that your schooldays are the happiest days of your life. I don’t really think I can claim that just yet but I can certainly vouch for my schooldays so far having been extremely happy and rewarding and I would like to reserve the right to return to Tavistock in 50 years’ time to give a more definitive answer!

Thank you.

Daniel Brooks

We started off getting their name wrong and calling them "Popcorn", but then we read their shirts and realised they were called Copthorne! We lost the toss and they chose to field first so we were batting. The whole team hit the ball very well and got lots of rounders. At one stage Lucy did a gigantic lob and got a rounder and Lauren also did a very big hit and got a rounder. In that innings we got 8.5. We then went into field. Tia was a strong bowler and Lucy was very strong on second base and got many people out. Our deeps were also very strong and stopped lots of fast moving balls. In that innings they got 6.5. Then we went into bat again and Effie did a very good shot that got her a rounder. They had improved on bowling and got lots of balls on target. In that innings we got 12 rounders. We then fielded and Lauren was amazing on third base and stumped lots of people out. Sophie ran very fast chasing lots of fast balls in deep. The final score was 17.5 - 10 to us. Well done girls a great game. (Words by Connie Davies, Year 4)

Colts Cricket v Brambletye

We started off losing the toss and having to bat first. We played well against some very good bowlers but in the end we only managed 32 runs. We then went into field and bowled their opening batsman out on the first ball. We bowled well throughout the innings and they ended up with 49 runs. Wicket takers were me and Chris. Man of the match was Chris for his excellent run out. Unlucky Tavi better luck next time. (Words by Joe Donegan, Year 6)

1st Cricket v Brambletye

Brambletye started batting and reached 95 for 8 wickets. We did very well in the field and ran a few players out. We then batted and reached their total within 11 overs. Freddie Davies scored 34 runs and William Boyes scored his highest total so far of 19 not out. Well done everyone. (Words by Henry Smethurst, Year 8)

Under 8/9 Cricket v Brambletye

We won the toss and decided to field first. We did some great fielding especially Alex Dench with some improved throwing. Batting is where we all did very well scoring a lot of runs. Brambletye did win the game but we played well. I couldn't choose a man of the match as everyone played so great. With a little more practise I think we will win our next match. (Words by Raphael Leigh, Year 3)

Match Reports - Week 3

Under 8/9 Rounders v Brighton College

We lost the toss and they chose to field first. Lucy started and they got two no balls and had to practise a couple of times. We all hit the ball very well and got loads of rounders. In the first quarter we got 9.5 rounders. In the second quarter we went into field. Lucy got a lot of people out by stumping them on second base. Effie stumped a lot of people on third. They got six rounders. We then batted again and Tia did an amzing rounder then Effie also did a very good shot that got her half a rounder. We scored 5.5 rounders. We then fielded again. Charlotte was very good on fourth base and stumped a lot of people. Sophie was very good in deep and stopped lots of fast moving balls. The end score was 14.5-10 to us. Well done girls a good game. (Words by Connie Davies, Year 4)

Under 10 Rounders v Brighton College

We lost the toss and batted first. The bowler wasn't very accurate so we ended up with lots of half rounders. We all ran safely so no-one got out. We then fielded. Their hits were really good but our fielding was excellent and we caught their biggest hitter out along with many other players. The half time score was 6.5-5.5 to them. We then batted again. We were not discouraged by the score and hit better than ever. With again no-one getting out. The final score was 14.5-12.5 to us. Well done Tavi a great win. (Words by Millie Critchlow, Year 5)

Under 8/9 Cricket v Ardingly

From my point of view we did some amazing fielding but unfortunately we did not manage to catch anyone out. As I understand cricket better now we did some great communication and team work. Suddenly I found a five minute delay because someone from the opposition took my bat! We went through quickly with some amazing shots. We lost the game by 61 runs. Better luck next time. (Words by Raphael Leigh, Year 3)

Colts Cricket v Ardingly

Ardingly started off winning the toss and choosing to bat first. We played well against a good side and started to wear down their batsmen. They ended up scoring 54 runs. Wicket takers were me, Theo, Ben, Chris and Alex. We then went into bat with Cameron scoring 18 runs and the rest of the side batting well. We finished off with 70 runs. Man of the match was Cameron for his excellent batting. Well done Tavi, keep up the good work. (Words by Joe Donegan, Year 6)

1st Cricket v Ardingly

We batted first and put on an impressive total of 137. Henry scored 50 runs and was retired, Freddie scored 42 and Daniel hit some impressive sixes and finished on 24. They then went into bat and we were bowling particularly well getting many wickets in the first few overs. However, we gave away too many wides and one of their batsmen stayed in and won the game for them in the last over. Better luck next time. (Words by Henry Smethurst, Year 8)

PGL Part 1

Upon arrival the children took part in some fun games and then after dinner had an interactive quiz.

We lost the toss and batted first. We had lots of great hits resulting in rounders. Unfortunately me, Lily, Tilly and Laura all got out on second base. Then it was our turn to field with a few misfields of the ball we gave away rounders plus lots of Fonthill were big hitters. In spite of this we managed to make the half time score 5-4 to us. After some oranges we came back stronger with no players getting out and bigger hits being made. Then we fielded again. We did well and lots of Fonthill players had to stop at first base, we also got six players out with good catches and stumping. I think we all played very well so I can't choose a girl/boy of the match. The final score was 8.5 - 8 to us. Well done Tavi keep up the good work. (Words by Millie Critchlow, Year 5)

Under 8/9 Rounders v Skippers Hill

We lost the toss and they chose to field first. We were as a team very strong and hit the ball very well. We got lots of rounders, although thier fielding was quite strong. In that quarter we got six and a half rounders. Then we went into field. Tia was a superb bowler and got every ball on target, at one stage a Skippers Hill girl forgot to run and we got her out. That half they were drawing with us. We went into bat again and Tia did a brilliant shot that went miles. Our fielding had improved massively and we could stop lots of fast moving balls. In that quarter we got seven and a half and they got nine. The final score was 15.5 - 14 to Skippers Hill. It was a very close game and we were all disappointed to lose but we can't wait until our next game. I would give Tia lady of the match for her excellent batting and her amazing catch. (Words by Connie Davies, Year 4)

Under 8/9 Cricket v Copthorne

We started off well knowing that it was the first cricket match for Year 3. Copthorne won the toss and they chose to field first. So we batted. Henrik and Louis started us off with some amazing teamwork and batting. Our batting got better and better throughout. Now in the other half of the match we were fielding and Nathaniel was bowling well. I caught a player out but that still didn't get us any runs. The end score was 131-231 to Copthorne. (Words by Raphael Leigh, Year 3)

Colts Cricket v Copthorne

We started off without a toss and Copthorne batted first. We started off well taking their opening batsman on the 3rd ball of the first over. Alex took a further three wickets and Richard, Alfie and I all took one each. Despite this and some good fielding Copthorne scored 90 runs. We then went into bat feeling confident. We batted well but in the end we only managed to score 44 runs. The man of the match goes to Alex for his excellent bowling. (Words by Joe Donegan, Year 6)

We will be leaving school at 2:30pm and returning at approximately 6:45pm on Sunday 8th May.

Today we have enjoyed a delicious cake sale, fancy dress competition, in which the costumes were very imaginative and creative, and a talent show that shows that "Tavistock has got Talent". Thank you to all of the children and teachers for putting on such a wonderful show.

We will update the website soon with the amount we managed to raise and with some more pictures of the day.

After our defeat last week we came back fighting against Cumnor House. Within the first ten minutes we had scored three tries and dominated the pitch. We displayed good passing and strong tackling and we played brilliantly as a team. We finished the season with a high scoring seven tries and three conversions. The final score was 41-0. All the boys played brilliantly for our last match. Tries scored: Matthew Jackson 1, Alfie Moore 2, Richard Hoyle 2, Joe Donegan 1 and Chris Brooks 1. I would like to thank all the teachers who took us for rugby and all the boys for their hard work. (Words by Cameron Homer, Year 6)

We started very well scoring two tries. Then with some poor tackling they came back and scored two tries. Daniel scored three tries taking his total for the season to twenty two and Henry scored two. Well done a good end to the season. (Words by Freddie Davies, Year 8)

Under 8/9 Tag Rugby v Fonthill

We played very well in the game and the final score was 65-40 to us. Henrik scored five tries, James and I scored three each and Louis and Raphael scored one. Well done. (Words by Alex Dench)

Under 8 Netball v Cumnor House

We were happy to see Cumnor House again as we had already played against them. The game began well, Jessie was going great at trying to get free but their defence was too strong. Charlotte was doing pretty well too but however hard we tried, we could not get the ball up their side of the court. Luckily, at the end of the first quarter we scored a goal. In the second quarter Cumnor scored two goals. In the third quarter, no one scored but in the fourth quarter Cumnor scored again. The end result was 3-1 to them. Despite losing the game, we had a lovely tea during which Jessie dipped her chips in the refreshing squash! (Words by Stephanie Towler, Year 3)

Under 9 Netball v Cumnor House

It was a tough match. Cumnor were very strong. They passed the ball quickly down the court and marked closely. We played hard and kept trying but were beaten 11-1. We need to pass the ball more quickly in future. Better luck next time Tavi! (Words by Effie King, Year 4)

Under 10 Netball Tournament at Brighton College

In very cold and windy conditions a total of nine teams turned out to play in the tournament. In our section we won our first two games but were beaten by the eventual winners Cumnor House. This was good enough for us to go through to the semi-finals where we played Burgess Hill but sadly lost. Our final game of the day was the playoff for third and fourth place with Brighton College. We played well but although equal at half time Brighton pulled away in the second half eventually winning the match. After playing five games we were all rather tired but were very pleased to have finished fourth overall in what was a very tough tournament. Well played everyone.
We were ready to start the match and have fun! Hurst were a bit stronger than us. We passed the ball up the court rather well and our defence was brilliant. Wehn the ball reached the D Jessie scored our first goal. Unfortunately, Hurst scored a goal straight after us! We did very well but in the end the score was 3-2 to them. I think we should all be girls of the match for working really, really hard. (Words by Stephanie Towler, Year 3)

Under 9 Netball v Hurstpierpoint

We won the toss and chose to take the first centre pass. The first quarter ended 0-0. We scored twice in the second quarter and Hurst scored in the third quarter making it 2-1 to Tavi. We continued to have most of the play and lots of shots at goal. Connie Davies and Lucy Jurkowski played well in defence. Hurst only had three shots during the whole match.Final score 3-1 to Tavi. It was good to win against a big school. Well done everyone. (Words by Effie King, Year 4)

Under 8/9 Tag Rugby v St Aubyns

This was an exciting and fast moving game. Although St Aubyns were quite a strong team, we kept equal with them all the way through, with some excellent tagging and great tries. Tries were scored by Nathaniel, Henrik, two by George and an outstanding five tries by James - who was definitely man of the match. Well played team. (Words by Henrik Ainslie, Year 3)

Colts A v St Aubyns

We started well in the first half and were soon one try up. Sadly this did not last as St Aubyns were a well organised team with plenty of passing. Unfortunately we played well as individuals but we did not play well as a team. Final score was 24-10 to St Aubyns. (Words by Cameron Homer, Year 6)

1st v St Aubyns

We started slowly and allowed the opposition to score two tries, one of which was converted. Then we got into the game and had scored four tries by half time. At the end Daniel, Henry and I had scored three tries each and the end score was 46-24 to us. Well done.

T&S v Copthorne: We immediately defended fiercely pushing them back and making tag after tag forcing their mistakes. With so much turnover ball we had lots of possession and ran in four excellent tries. Georgie's try was the try of the match for her courage in breaking through their line and running forwards hard, chased by four defenders! The final score was a comfortable 4-1 win to Tavi.

T&S v Great Walstead: Our defensive line kept its formation and again every player was making their tags with Jasmin semmingly on a mission to collect as many as possible. Tavi made far fewer mistakes and supported the runner everytime so the two line breaks converted into tries, the pick of which was Laura's jinking run over 30 metres to touch down. Showing great teamwork and a never say die attitude Tavi won the match 2-1 and with it the tournament. Well done Tavi keep up the good work. Girl of the tea was Laura for savouring every mouthful and for creating new flavours with chips, sausage, ketchup and chocolate icing!
Duke of Kent started with the ball and ran down the pitch scoring two quick tries. We held them off for ten minutes or so, then they broke through and scored another try. The next half started, we held them off for a while but they scored another three tries. Soon after I scored two tries, the whistle went for full time. Final score was 30-10 to them.
Colts A Rugby v Duke of Kent

We started well and pushed Duke of Kent back. They were really good and scored several tries. Montague got one back but I missed the conversion. The end score was 29-5 to them. Man of the match was Montague for running hard and Alfie for good tackling. (Words by Cameron Homer, Year 6)

Kent started swiftly with a try and conversion and despite good tackles from Cameron, Alfie and myself a further three tries and conversion followed. I nearly scored after a great kick from Darius but they defended well. 2nd half, another try to Kent. Darius did a good kick and William B was fearless in his tackles. I nearly made a try but got caught, but I managed to pass the ball to Cam who scored our first try of the season. Darius expertly converted it. Kent managed a further try. At the end of the game I almost scored a try but the ball went out of play and the ref blew the whistle for full time.Although we lost we’re improving with every game, well done Tavi. Final score: 38 – 7 to Duke of Kent (Words by Theo Van Vliet, Year 5)

Under 10 Netball v Ashdown House

We won the toss and chose first centre pass. We quickly used this to our advantage and Holly scored a lovely goal. This put us in a good mood and we wanted to play well which we did. Ashdown House were a strong team and by half time it was 2-2. After a pep talk from Millie's Dad we pulled ahead scoring two goals. In the last quarter Ashdown rallied and fought back with two goals which meant a nail biting finish right up to the whistle going as I was lining up to shoot. What a game, well done everyone. (Words by Sophie White, Year 5)

Under 8 Netball v Great Walstead and Copthorne

It began with us playing Great Walstead, we didn't start very well but we began to get used to the way they played. We passed the ball up the court very neatly but Great Walstead defended very well and got the ball back again. They passed the ball up the court very fast and very well, eventually it reached our D and they scored a goal. then it was our centre pass and Charlotte quickly passed to Jessie who finally scored a goal. At the end of the match, the score was 3-2 to them. Next we played against Copthorne which were very good. It was their centre pass and they passed brilliantly down the court and scored a goal. We were really trying hard to score a goal but neither Sophie Hinton nor Jessie could score. The end score was 7-0 to them. Mrs Hawes said that I should be player of the match for trying hard to get into space. Well done girls, I am sure we can do better next time.

I think it may have been Skippers Hill's little ones' first match but our Year 2's were working so well for their first match too. Lulu did brilliantly as goal shooter and scored her first goal, first time! We had beautiful high passes from Grace and very good bounce passes from Charlotte. I thought Jessica was a good defender and was great at scoring goals. The end score was 8-2 to us. I think the girls of the match should be Charlotte for her fantastic bounce passes and Jessica for scoring so many goals. (Words by Stephanie Towler, Year 3)

Under 10's v Fonthill Lodge

Fonthill won the toss and decided to have first centre pass. We quickly intercepted the ball and scored a goal. We scored again after a few attempts. Fonthill then came back and scored an amazing goal at the top of the D. At quarter time the score was 2-1 to Tavi. In the second quarter our shooting slipped and we didn't score a goal. There was some excellent defending but when we reached the centre third we didn't space out making it hard to pass the ball. Jasmin was marking her player really well and getting free and Millie did some great passing. Holly was also working really hard in the D but Fonthill managed to get another goal. We went into the third quarter drawing 2-2. In the third quarter our passing wasn't very good but Tilly was making numerous interceptions and had the most turnover ball in the whole game. Neither team scored in this half however. In the last quarter our shooting was a lot better and we quickly scored a goal. We started to work better as a team and scored another two goals making the final score 6-2 to us. Although we won it did highlight a few areas which we need to improve upon. (Words by Sophie White, Year 5)

Although we lost the toss we very quickly gained possession of the ball and scored. By half time the score was 8-2 to us and we had a comfortable lead. However, Cottesmore fought back strongly in the second half and some silly errors by us allowed them to almost catch up. The final score was 8-7 to us. Player of the match was Tilly for excellent defending. Well done everyone. (Words by Sophie White, Year 5)

Under 9 netball v Fonthill Lodge

We won the toss and chose to take the first centre pass. In the first quarter Fonthill had a splendid defence, but at times Tavi poked through their defence like the sun poking through the clouds. Tavi shot 4 or 5 times and at first struggled with the height of the post, which was lower than we are used to. Then I scored followed by Emily Greenwood. In the second quarter we all fought hard and Emily managed to score again and thanks to great passing and intercepting we kept the ball at our end and I scored this time from some distance taking the match to 4-0 at half time.

In the second half we scored twice more. Fonthill had some of the play but could not take their chances, until the last few minutes of the game when they got a goal.Final score 6-1 to Tavi. It was a hard fought match with good defending from Lucy and Lauren and good mid-court play from Tia, Connie and Amy. Amy who took a bad fall in the second half but bravely finished the match although she really hurt her arm. Woman of the match was Tia Homer for great intercepting. Another good game. Well-done Tavi. (Words by Effie King, Year 4)

Under 8/9 tag rugby v Skippers Hill

We played two games of touch rugby against Skippers Hill and both were exciting games. The first game we won 15-0. Tries were scored by Nathaniel, James and me. The second game we won 10-5. Tries scored by James and me. We played well in both games which were fast moving and fun. However, we were penalised numerous times for running with the ball under one arm. It’s the same old thing boys, remember keep both hands on the ball! (Words by Henrik Ainslie, Year 3)

Colts A rugby v Skippers Hill

After a very long delay we finally kicked off. We played a nine a side match. They won the toss and we were receiving the ball. After a battle we broke through and scored two tries and kicked one of the conversions. Skippers Hill came back with two tries and kicked both of the conversions. At half time we were down by two points. In the second half Skippers Hill came back strongly and scored another try but missed the conversion. Ben Ainslie scored an amazing try and I kicked the conversion. In the last play we were awarded a penalty and I scored a converted try to end the match. The final score was 26-19 to Tavistock. Alfie was trying his best to tackle and Matty did a great job throwing the ball into the lineout. (Words by Cameron Homer, Year 6)

Colts B rugby v Skippers Hill

The score doesn’t show how close we were to lots of tries. This was our best game yet and we showed lots of promise. Proper passing was seen and we were yards from a try on lots of occasions but were blocked. Alfie Carrington took down a player with great skill, Darius tried really hard to break through supported by me, Will B, Cam and Max. Lots of great battling to the line, but we faced stiff opposition who could run well with the ball. Final score 0 – 22 (4 tries and 1 conversion) to Skipper Hill. Still, well done Tavi, keep it up. (Words by Theo Van Vliet, Year 5)

1st rugby v Skippers Hill

We played three matches. In the first game against their A team we lost 21-19. We played extremely well and were unlucky to lose for the first time this season. In the second game we won against their B team 14-0, with Freddie and James both going over for tries. We then played a third game against their A team and lost. By this time we had played two matches and were very tired!
We played indoors because it was so cold. Wes started well with Lucy doing great stick work and scoring the first two goals. Brambletye came back and scored a goal. Lauren then scored her first ever goal in hockey, followed by Amy scoring another goal. In the second half Brambletye came back very strong and we spent all the time defending. Emily was excellent in defence. Final score was 4-2 to Tavi. Lauren was lady of the match for scoring her first ever goal. (Words by Tia Homer, Year 4)

Under 10 Netball Tournament at Cumnor House

We were one of 16 teams playing in the tournament. In our first section we had Cumnor House A, Fonthill and Holmewood House. Our first match was against Holmewood House who proved to be a very strong team and we lost 9-2. Next we played Fonthill who we have played on a number of occasions. We all played well and eventually won 4-1. Our final match was against Cumnor. We knew it was going to be a tough match and were pleased to draw it 1-1. Although we didn't win our section and missed out to Cumnor on goal difference we had a great afternoon. Well played everyone. (Words by Sophie White, Year 5)

Under 8/9 Tag Rugby v Brambletye

It was a cold, wet day. Brambletye started with the ball and ran down the pitch scoring a try. Tavistock came fighting back straight away with two tries. Brambletye couldn't break through our defence so Tavi ran down the pitch scoring three more tries. Brambletye then ran down the pitch scoring two more tries. We then ran down and scored three more. With some excellent running Henrik scored a massive six tries and was awarded man of the match. James and I scored four tries each with some good running and dodging. The final result was 75-25 to Tavi. Well done. (Words by Alex Dench, Year 4)

Colts A Rugby v Brambletye A

We won the toss and kicked off. Brambletye scored the first try very quickly. Then they scored the second and kicked both of the conversions. Ben Ainslie dodged in and out and scored right under the posts. I kicked the conversion to end the first half. In the second half Brambletye scored another try and they missed the conversion. I had a very close run but unfortunately got pushed out into touch. They scored another but missed the conversion. The final score was 24-7 to them. The whole team played amazingly. (Words by Cameron Homer, Year 6)

Colts B Rugby v Lingfield

Lingfield started off strongly with a swift try, they had a fast player run and score a further try and conversion. I tried to tackle but their players were too fast and strong – more tries followed. Max had to leave the pitch with an injured shoulder but returned later. Cam battled to bring down one of their players but we lost the ball in the scrum. Will Buchanan tried hard to tackle and I brought a player down and prevented a try. Score at half time 17 – 0. In the second half we did some good passing down the line but we were outplayed, 3 more tries followed. Final score 32 – 0. Man of the match was Will Buchanan for trying extremely hard.

Colts B Rugby v Brambletye

In addition to the strong winds light rain started. We had to play immediately after our first game and they quickly got a try. Darius showed great aggression and had our best effort at a try but was brought down. Alfie got the ball, but a knock-on was called. Cam tried to tackle but a try and conversion followed. Score at half time 12 – 0. Brambletye had a good run for a try and a conversion. Darius had a good kick but they got two further tries and conversions. Final score 33 – 0. In both games we need to learn to tackle more fiercely and not be afraid to hold the ball. (Words by Theo Van Vliet, Year 5)

1st Rugby v Brambletye

They won the toss and kicked off into the wind. Daniel went on a break but knocked the ball over the line. It didn't matter though because we played well and in the words of Mr Gerrard our first scrum was "beautiful". Henry went under the posts for our first try and that was how the rain of tries started. Had Daniel and Henry been allowed to score I'm pretty sure we would have got a lot more. Max, William, James and I all chipped in with a try each. My man of the match goes to Luke who although he didnt't score, I'm sure the game would have been a lot tighter, scrappier and generally harder to win without his disciplined organisation of the backs. We held our shape well and continued our two match unbeaten streak. End score was 45-0 to us. Well done boys another win. (Words by Freddie Davies, Year 8)

Match Reports - Week 4

Under 8 Netball v Cumnor House

It began well, because in the first half we scored four and Cumnor scored 2, but in the second half Cumnor got used to the goals and started to speed up. It then got a little bit harder for us, but we all tried our best. At the end of the match the score was 6-3 to us. Sophie Hinton scored one goal and Jessica scored five. I think Grace should be girl of the match for working very hard to catch the ball. (Words by Stephanie Towler, Year 3)

Under 9’s Netball v Cumnor House

Our first match was against Cumnor ‘C’ team. We started strong, had lots of shots at goal and scored. In the second quarter Cumnor equalised. In the third quarter we had most of the play, with Emily Greenwood and me scoring goals to go ahead 3-1. We scored again in the final quarter taking the score to 4-1. Our second match was against Cumnor ‘A&B’. We started confidently and went 2-0 up. This was a much tighter match. Cumnor were dangerous when they got the chance to attack and levelled the match 2-2. In the third quarter thanks to good intercepting and great marking by us all and especially Amy Holness we edged ahead 4-3. We defended well and scored again in the final quarter to win the match 5-3. Great play Tavi! (Words by Effie King, Year 4)

Under 10 Netball v Cumnor House

We all started confidently. We were playing Cumnor House B's. Cumnor started with the ball but quickly we got the ball and Holly scored a brilliant goal. We passed well and marked tight. Tilly, Phoebe and Millie were defending really well. Jazzy and Tilly were like rockets up and down the court. Lily had a go at GS and Georgie played WA. They both did very well at positions they had not played in before. At half time the score was 7-1. there was some brilliant interceptions by the whole team. there was some brilliant shooting. The final score was 10-3 to Tavi. Well done. (Words by Sophie White, Year 5)

Under 8/9 Rugby v Sompting Abbots and Ashdown House

The team included our Under 8's who were playing in their first contact match with full tackling. Both matches proved quite a challenge and although we lost there was some good play by the team. Man of the match was James Wilson whose tackling was immense. (Words by Henrik Ainslie, Year 3)

Colts A Rugby v Sompting Abbotts

We won the toss and we played uphill with the wind against us, it was a very even match and I scored the first try and straight after Montague scored the second try, but I missed both conversions. Sompting Abbotts came back strong with good tackling and passing and scored the next two trys. In the second half we came back with Josh and Ben powering through, offloading to me to score another try and I kicked the conversion. Sompting Abbotts then scored a very quick try. Alfie ran hard and came back with another try in the corner and I kicked the conversion. They scored the last try making the final score 25-24 to them. The whole team played amazing but it was difficult to choose a man of the match so I think Josh for sheer determination, Ben for all round performance and Alfie for running hard. (Words by Cameron Homer, Year 6)

1st Rugby v Sompting Abbotts

In our first match of the term we dominated the game from the start. Henry scored three tries, Freddie, Daniel and Luke got one each and James converted four of the six. Final score was 38-0 to Tavi. (Words by Freddie Davies, Year 8)

In the first and second quarters Tavi were the by far the stronger team, attacking lots to lead 7-0 by half time. In the second half of the match both teams made changes and play was tighter, but St Aubyns were still unable to score. The match ended 8-0 to Tavistock. A great team effort. Amy ran the ball down well. There was good intercepting from Jasmine King and good shooting from Jessica White. Well done Tavi, keep it up! (Words by Effie King, Year 4)

Under 10 Netball v St Aubyns

It was a lovely sunny afternoon which I think put everyone in a good mood and we were very quickly started to pull ahead. St Aubyns played very well during the whole match but couldn’t catch up. The Tavi team played a good match throughout. Everyone participated well with some lovely interceptions from Laura and Georgie. Tilly and Millie worked strongly in defence and Phoebe and Lily played well on the wings while myself and Holly were kept busy shooting goals. The final score was 14-5 to us. Great match, good start to the term. (Words by Sophie White, Year 5)

Colts A v Lancing Prep

In a short match the team played extremely well but unfortunately Lancing were too strong. They managed to score two tries and win the game. Our tackling was very good and we must now work on maintaining our shape and providing support for the man in possession. A good platform to build upon.

Colts B v Lancing Prep

This was a difficult game as we had seen their team beat our A’s and then had to face them. The conditions were good and the pitch had dried out but despite our best efforts they quickly scored a try. They had 2 strong runners and we weren’t able to tackle them, 4 more tries followed plus 2 conversions. Special mention for Max Lanning who tackled a much bigger player despite getting hurt. Final score 31 – 0. We need to learn to tackle more. Better luck next time Tavi. (Words by Theo Van Vliet, Year 5)

Under 8/9 Tag Rugby v Lancing Prep

The weather was cold and clear although the pitch was muddy. Lancing started with the ball and quickly scored the first try. Tavi responded with some good running and passing but couldn’t get past Lancing’s defence. Lancing came back strongly and with good passing scored two more tries. In the second half James made several good runs but only one ended up in a try for Tavi. Lancing continued to play well and scored two more tries. Well done to James who deserved his man of the match title.
Tavi started strong and had several shots at goal, but failed to score. Handcross Park scored first and then Tavi got a goal back. In the second quarter both teams defended well and scored a goal each. In the third quarter, Handcross became more aggressive and got ahead 4-3. In the final quarter Tavi kept trying and came back stronger with the match ending 6-4 to us. The match was very tight. Both teams fought hard. Everybody played well as a team. Well done to Tia for great support up and down the court and Lauren for some good defending and passing. Good win Tavi! (Words by Effie King, Year 4)
